On Cliche Recommendations
Jan. 7th, 2010 09:32 amWith apologies to those who like either of the series I'm ranting about. This is my opinion and nothing more.

I am so sick of people comparing Twilight and Harry Potter.
Aside from both being "fantasy" they're only remotely in the same genre, and I think it is a poor comparison. Partly because, in my own opinion of course, I think Harry Potter is not a ton better than Twilight. It is better written (not that hard...) but I think the only reason people are comparing them is because Harry Potter was the last Big Thing, and there are still people completely and utterly obsessed with the series.
If you're going to recommend something based on the fact that it's fantasy and to get people to read something other than Twilight, there are SO MANY OTHER CHOICES than Harry freaking Potter!
How about Susan Cooper, Tamora Pierce, Lloyd Alexander, Kristin Cashore, Dianna Wynne Jones, PC Cast, Robin McKinley, Garth Nix, Eoin Colfer, Bruce Coville, Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, Holly Black, Esther Friesner, or hell, how about the classics: Ursula K LeGuin, Andre Norton, Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard, George Orwell, Aldus Huxley?
I have gotten probably sicker of hearing about how much better HP is than Twilight than I have about Twilight itself...
